Curated by Chloe Hodge and Zena Khan for Platform Asia, Homing In is a series of digital commissions considering international, contemporary and historic experiences of confinement and ‘sheltering in place’. A collaboration between two curators based in London and Kuala Lumpur, Homing In takes as its starting point the phenomena emerging worldwide during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. This entire project is conceptualised, realised and presented via remote-working and, reflecting the surge in social media usage in the past year, is presented on Instagram @_homing_In.
Today, we move and connect like never before and while has allowed for global interconnectivity, mid-pandemic we have found our lives upended all at once. Locked down in simultaneity, individual experiences have varied from mild inconvenience to dire circumstance: some are secluded at home, while others are stranded with no way to return. For Homing In, five artists harness and creatively examine technology as a tool for connection and comfort in times of isolation.
Featuring commissions by Suleman Faisal, Fatima Khademi, Rajinder Singh, Himali Singh Soin and Shanzay Subzwari.
Programme
Week 1: The Noise of Silence durational performance by Fatima Khademi sees the artist weave the history and present of her Persian-speaking Hazara community into a carpet, guided by the sounds of news from her homeland in Afghanistan. Watch here.
Week 2: To Tehran In My Dreams by Himali Singh Soin traces the development of long-distance communication, and a telegram glitch which influences contemporary communication. Watch here.
Week 3: Ghabrana Nahin Hai unfolds artist Shanzay Subzwari’s experience of the COVID pandemic, relaying her cross-cultural journey between lockdowns in the cities of London and Karachi. Watch here.
Week 4: Suleman Faisal has produced a documentary work exploring micro-aggressions in the kitchen, and hierarchies in hosting and guesting. Coming soon.
Week 5: A performance by Rajinder Singh will encourage audiences to inhabit their homes differently, drawing from his ongoing project Exercises in Spatial Justice which highlights the deprivation of personal space in Ireland’s immigration detention centres. Coming soon.
Homing In has been commissioned by Platform Asia for the Sudden Beams programme.
